Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Powerplant Mechanic Preparatory Course - Job Training Program

The 128-clock hour Aviation Maintenance course is designed to prepare individuals with civilian or military aviation experience for the Federal Aviation Certification of Power Plant Technician. Coupling classroom discussions and shop exercises, the individual will become competent in the Power Plant phase of Certification in FAA Regulated Aircraft Maintenance.In this short-term program, you will receive a review of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) learning statement guide for Airman Certification, along with hands-on practical skills review in preparation for the FAA written, oral, and practical exams. Course tuition provides you with textbooks, prep-ware, and exam fees. Exam fees are valid for up to 90 days after the last day of class. To pass the course, you must obtain certification; otherwise, your student record will reflect an incomplete status.

Powerplant and Airframe mechanics (A&Ps) tune, repair, replace, or upgrade aircraft engines, otherwise known as powerplants. They also perform inspections on a needed basis as well as regular intervals within the lifespan of an engine. These mechanics search for problems, but they also perform a long list of preventative maintenance and service. The FAA has strict rules about the care and maintenance of aircraft. At pre-determined times, airframe and powerplant mechanics perform certain work whether it is needed or not. This helps to ensure that the aircraft are safe to operate and unlikely to experience in-flight failures or other problems. The scope of work performed by airframe and powerplant mechanics is extremely wide due to the variations and complexities of aircraft flying today. Also, as more fuel-efficient aircraft come online, and composite materials are increasingly used in new designs, the duties of airframe and powerplant mechanics will continue to expand. Some A&Ps are trained to troubleshoot avionics equipment, but that is usually considered a separate specialty.

1. All students must receive an FAA 8610 Sign-off.2. Sign-off interview – Schedule interview with FAA FSDO Office in Greensboro, NC at 336- 369-3900. SkillBridge students coming from outside of NC can get conduct their interview from the state of their assigned duty station but all students must present a completed 8610 sign-off.3 Craven CC will provide a “how to” guide on preparing the 8610 package. Contact program coordinator to request package.4. FAA Airman CertificationAll prospective students should contact the Craven Community College FAA A&P Program Coordinator, Megan Johnson, at (252) 444-6013 or johnsonm@cravencc.edu at least 90 days prior to the start of the class to ensure all prerequisites are completed prior to enrolling in the course.

SkillBridge students need to schedule their Oral and Practical Exam with the DME during the first week of class to ensure licensure examination during the skillbridge class period.
