SkillBridge eligibility requirements, based on current official DoD sources.

The broad DoD rule is real, but it is not the whole story. The safest public summary is: you must be within 180 days of separation, have already completed 180 continuous days on active duty, and receive command approval. Your service may apply stricter duration or process limits.

Baseline DoD requirements

These points are supported by the current DoD SkillBridge FAQ and DoDI 1322.29. They are the right baseline for a public-facing eligibility page.

Within 180 days of separation

The core DoD rule is that a participant must be expected to separate or be released from active duty within 180 days of starting SkillBridge.

At least 180 continuous active-duty days completed

DoD guidance also requires the member to have already completed 180 continuous days on active duty before starting the program.

Command approval is required

Participation is voluntary and member-initiated, but it still requires approval from the first field-grade commander in the chain of command with Article 15 authority.

Mission requirements still come first

A command may deny or end participation if operational or mission needs require it.

Military pay and benefits continue

Members remain on military status during SkillBridge and continue receiving military pay, allowances, and benefits from their service.

Providers cannot pay wages for SkillBridge time

The host organization may train the member, but the member is not supposed to receive wages, salary, or a stipend for SkillBridge participation.

Service-specific caveats

This is where many public summaries become inaccurate. The official branch guidance does not always give everyone the same participation window.

Do not promise a universal 180-day window.

Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, and future branch policy updates can add their own process requirements. Final eligibility still depends on service guidance and command approval.

These numbers are useful for scale, but they should be treated as program indicators rather than a perfect audited dashboard.

The GAO reported in August 2024 that nearly 12,000 service members participated in the first half of fiscal year 2024 and that DoD still had data-quality gaps across the services. That is why this page relies on official source documents and dates rather than one undated summary.
Important note
This page is informational, not a command decision.

The final decision always depends on your branch guidance, your command, your separation timeline, and your specific circumstances.
