About the program
Over the course of this internship, the intern will learn how interpretation helps Washington State Parks achieve it's mission to 'connect all Washingtonians to their natural and cultural heritage an provide memorable recreational and educational experiences that enhance their lives.' Central Whidbey Area State Parks sees over 100,000 visitors annually and provides interpretive experiences for more than 20,000 of those visitors at the area's parks, including Ft Casey, Ft Ebey, Ebey's Landing and South Whidbey. Interns will work alongside more experienced staff to develop, implement, and evaluate formal and informal programs related to natural and cultural resources in the parks. With support of more experienced staff, develop, implement, and evaluate an interpretive program and/or special event of their own design. Support the successful running of any events. Learn about and assist in the development and production of interpretive signage. Shadow other parks staff (Rangers, Park Aides, C&Ms) to understand the full breadth of parks operations.
What you'll do
Park Ranger, Park Interpreter (Education), Park Program Specialist, Facility and Grounds Maintenance professions, light construction professions.
Eligibility
A positive team player; excellent public speaking skills; experience in educational methods, especially with youth; ability to work with volunteers of all ages; knowledge of cultural studies, Pacific Northwest history, and natural sciences; ability to work independently, yet stay within established guidelines and frameworks; organized. Intern will be working around children and general public and so intern will be required to pass a background check.
