About the program

The UBC Military Veterans Program (MVP) provides transitioning service members with hands-on training and a direct pathway into a career as a Millwright. Participants receive instruction in the fundamentals of industrial construction, machinery installation and maintenance, precision measurement and alignment, rigging, material handling, blueprint reading, and jobsite safety.Upon successful completion of the program and separation from military service, qualified participants may transition into a UBC-affiliated Millwright apprenticeship, where they can continue developing their skills through paid on-the-job training and classroom instruction. Millwrights work across a wide range of industries installing, maintaining, repairing, dismantling, and relocating industrial machinery and mechanical equipment.

What you'll do

Millwrights are skilled trades professionals responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, alignment, dismantling, and relocation of industrial machinery and mechanical equipment. Work may include conveyors, pumps, motors, turbines, compressors, gearboxes, production equipment, and other industrial systems.Primary duties include reading blueprints and technical drawings, performing precision measurement and equipment alignment, installing and maintaining machinery, conducting preventative maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical systems, performing rigging and material handling, and safely operating forklifts, aerial lifts, and other equipment when properly trained.Millwrights may work in manufacturing facilities, power generation plants, distribution centers, refineries, automotive facilities, food processing plants, warehouses, and other industrial environments. Work may involve new construction, equipment installation, facility expansions, shutdowns, outages, maintenance, and modernization projects.Following successful completion of the UBC Military Veterans Program Millwright training, qualified participants may transition into a UBC-affiliated Millwright apprenticeship where they receive paid on-the-job training, progressive wage increases, continued classroom instruction, and opportunities to work toward journey-level Millwright status.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet all Department of Defense SkillBridge eligibility requirements and receive approval from their military chain of command prior to participation.Participants should have an interest in pursuing a career as a Millwright and be able to safely perform the physical requirements associated with industrial construction and maintenance work. This may include standing for extended periods, climbing, lifting and carrying tools or materials, working at heights, working around industrial machinery, and working in varying environmental conditions.Participants must demonstrate professionalism, reliability, a strong work ethic, and the ability to follow safety procedures and instructions. Applicants must also be willing to meet any additional requirements established by the applicable UBC-affiliated apprenticeship program, local union, signatory contractor, or jobsite.A valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, the ability to travel for available work, and successful completion of applicable drug screening, background checks, or site-specific access requirements may be required depending on the apprenticeship program, employer, or project location.Previous Millwright or construction experience is not required.
