About the program
The United Association Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) Welding Program is a Department of Defense SkillBridge training opportunity designed to prepare transitioning active-duty service members for careers in the piping industry. Participants receive intensive, hands-on welding training focused on the skills, techniques, and industry standards used in the pipe trades.The program combines classroom instruction with practical shop training to help participants develop job-ready welding skills and prepare for a successful transition into civilian employment. Upon successful completion, participants may have the opportunity to pursue placement with a United Association local union and continue their career development through a registered apprenticeship in the pipe trades.
What you'll do
UA Apprentices gain hands-on experience installing, maintaining, and repairing piping and mechanical systems in residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional settings. Working alongside skilled professionals on active jobsites, apprentices learn industry best practices, including safety protocols, blueprint reading, code compliance, and modern installation techniques. Apprentices also participate in classroom training covering trade theory, math, science, and emerging technologies. UA apprentices earn competitive wages and benefits from day one, with pay increases as apprentices progress through their training.
Eligibility
Must be a transitioning active-duty Service member with the ability to lift 50lbs or more and be able to stand for long periods of time.

The VIP program combines classroom instruction with practical shop training to help participants develop job-ready welding skills and prepare for a successful transition into civilian employment. The program is 100% free to participants and does not require the GI Bill. During the program, students have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications and 16 college credits from Washtenaw Community College, providing valuable credentials that support their continued education and career development.Upon successful completion, participants earn direct entry into a UA registered apprenticeship program and guaranteed employment with a UA signatory contractor in an agreed upon location nationwide.
