This internship provides an opportunity to apply military leadership, operational planning, and mission execution experience while gaining hands-on experience managing software-intensive defense programs. Participants will work alongside experienced project managers, software engineers, systems engineers, and government customers supporting the development, integration, and early demonstration of mission-critical software capabilities.This position is well suited for military personnel with experience leading technical teams, managing complex operations, coordinating multidisciplinary organizations, or supporting acquisition, command and control, intelligence, aviation, cyber, or weapons system programs who are interested in transitioning into civilian project management careers.

What you'll do

Position OverviewOnyx Aerospace is seeking transitioning active-duty Service Members for a DoD SkillBridge Internship supporting advanced Department of Defense software development and technology demonstration programs.This internship provides an opportunity to apply military leadership, operational planning, and mission execution experience while gaining hands-on experience managing software-intensive defense programs. Participants will work alongside experienced project managers, software engineers, systems engineers, and government customers supporting the development, integration, and early demonstration of mission-critical software capabilities.This position is well suited for military personnel with experience leading technical teams, managing complex operations, coordinating multidisciplinary organizations, or supporting acquisition, command and control, intelligence, aviation, cyber, or weapons system programs who are interested in transitioning into civilian project management careers.SkillBridge Program InformationThis internship is conducted under the Department of Defense SkillBridge Program. Participants remain on active-duty status and continue receiving military pay and benefits through their military service while assigned to Onyx Aerospace.Participation is contingent upon:Approval by the participant's chain of commandEligibility under the DoD SkillBridge ProgramCompletion of all required SkillBridge documentationKey ResponsibilitiesProject CoordinationSupport planning and execution of defense software development projects from initial planning through customer demonstrations.Assist with development and maintenance of integrated schedules, action item trackers, risk registers, and project documentation.Participate in project reviews, planning meetings, technical interchange meetings, and customer briefings.Track project milestones and assist with coordinating engineering activities.Software Development SupportObserve and support Agile software development processes, sprint planning, and software release activities.Coordinate with software developers, systems engineers, cybersecurity specialists, and test teams.Assist with documentation supporting software integration, verification, validation, and customer demonstrations.Support planning and execution of prototype demonstrations and technology maturation activities.Customer & Team CoordinationAssist with preparing meeting materials, technical reports, and executive presentations.Coordinate action items across multidisciplinary engineering teams.Support customer communications and program reporting activities.Learn government program management processes supporting DoD software acquisition.Professional DevelopmentDuring the internship, participants will gain practical experience with:Defense software program managementAgile project managementGovernment acquisition processesDigital engineeringSoftware development lifecycle managementSystems engineering integrationRisk managementCustomer engagementProgram execution within a defense contracting environmentDesired QualificationsIdeal candidates have military experience in one or more of the following areas:Program ManagementAcquisitionAviation OperationsSpace OperationsCyber OperationsIntelligenceCommand and ControlCommunicationsEngineeringLogisticsTest and EvaluationInformation TechnologyMission PlanningPreferred SkillsExperience leading military teams, projects, or operational missions.Strong organizational and planning skills.Experience coordinating multiple organizations or functional teams.Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.Interest in software development, systems engineering, defense technology, or government acquisition.Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications including Excel, PowerPoint, Project, or similar tools.Active Secret Security Clearance is required with TS/SCI highly desirable.What We're Looking ForSuccessful candidates demonstrate:Strong leadership and accountabilityMission-focused decision makingInitiative and ownershipExcellent communication skillsAdaptability in dynamic environmentsCollaborative approach to solving complex problemsDesire to continue supporting national defense through civilian industryAdditional InformationSpecific assignments will be tailored to the participant's military background, leadership experience, technical expertise, and Onyx's program needs.
