About the program

The goal of the Academy is to identify, develop, and evaluate military talent for potential placement into The HHS Next Mission EVS Leadership Academy is a 16-week DoD SkillBridge program designed to prepare transitioning service members for leadership careers in healthcare Environmental Services (EVS).This program provides military leaders with hands-on experience, structured leadership development, mentorship, and exposure to hospital EVS operations. Participants will apply the leadership, operational, and people-management skills developed through military service while learning how to lead in a civilian healthcare environment.

What you'll do

The goal of the Academy is to identify, develop, and evaluate military talent for potential placement into HHS EVS Assistant Director or Director-level opportunities upon successful completion of the program.Successful completion of the Academy does not guarantee employment or a specific position. Placement will be based on the participant's performance, leadership capabilities, available opportunities, business needs, and successful completion of the HHS hiring process.ResponsibilitiesLearn and apply the fundamentals of hospital Environmental Services operationsProvide leadership that supports a team environment built on morale, accountability, quality, and respectWork alongside EVS leadership and team members in a fast-paced healthcare environmentDevelop skills in recruiting, onboarding, training, coaching, and team developmentParticipate in daily inspections, assessments, rounding, and quality-control activitiesSupport initiatives designed to improve patient and customer satisfactionLearn and apply healthcare safety, infection prevention, and regulatory standardsAnalyze operational data and identify opportunities for improvementGain exposure to staffing, scheduling, productivity, labor management, and budgetingLearn how to establish, maintain, and monitor quality-control systemsCollaborate with department, facility, and HHS leadership to achieve operational goalsDevelop the ability to identify problems, make sound decisions, and implement effective solutionsParticipate in leadership meetings, audits, operational planning, and performance reviewsComplete a leadership development project focused on improving EVS operationsReceive ongoing coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback from HHS leadersDemonstrate the ability to translate military leadership experience into civilian healthcare operationsRequirementsMust be an eligible U.S. military service member approved to participate in the DoD SkillBridge ProgramMust have command approval to participate in the HHS Next Mission EVS Leadership AcademyMust be able to commit to the full 16-week programMust be willing to work onsite within an HHS healthcare facilityMust demonstrate leadership experience gained through military service, professional experience, or bothMust possess strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skillsMust be willing to learn healthcare Environmental Services operationsMust be willing to receive coaching, mentorship, and performance feedbackMust be willing to relocate for future HHS leadership opportunities when applicablePreferred QualificationsThe following are preferred but not required:Military leadership experienceExperience supervising personnelExperience managing teams or complex operationsExperience with logistics, facilities, maintenance, supply chain, or healthcareExperience with training and developmentExperience with safety, compliance, or quality programsExperience managing resources, budgets, or equipmentHealthcare or Environmental Services experienceBachelor's degree or equivalent leadership experienceFamiliarity with OSHA, The Joint Commission, or other regulatory requirementsProficiency in languages other than English, especially SpanishPotential Career PathThe HHS Next Mission EVS Leadership Academy is designed to create a pathway from military service into healthcare leadership.Military Service → HHS Next Mission EVS Leadership Academy → EVS Assistant Director / EVS DirectorAt the conclusion of the 16-week program, participants will be evaluated on leadership performance, operational knowledge, professionalism, communication, cultural alignment, and overall readiness for civilian healthcare leadership.Based on performance and available opportunities, successful participants may be considered for:EVS Assistant DirectorEVS DirectorEmployment, position, location, compensation, and promotion are not guaranteed and remain subject to HHS business needs and the applicable hiring process.Important to KnowThis opportunity is exclusively for eligible DoD SkillBridge participants transitioning from military service into civilian careers.Participants will continue to receive their military compensation and benefits through the Department of Defense during their approved SkillBridge participation, subject to applicable military policies and eligibility.The HHS Next Mission EVS Leadership Academy is a leadership development and evaluation program.
